Most folks planning a Hawaii vacation do not realize how much you can do for free or cheap. Yes, things can be expensive in Hawaii, but if you take the time to plan and research you can save a bundle.
Of course, not everyone's goal is to save money. Some people save up all year for one fabulous week where money is not to be worried about. Good on ya!
That is Hawaii's main industry, tourists who are spending money, so go ahead, do your part to keep Hawaii going!
No matter if you are free spending or on a budget, the same activities are available for all. Your budget just determines how much you can do!
Now lets get to the nitty gritty. What are the things you can do on Oahu?
Visit Hawaii Landmarks
Famous landmarks in Hawaii include the Arizona Memorial (free), Diamond Head (nominal fee), North Shore ($2.50 bus ride from Waikiki), Hanauma Bay (under $10), Waikiki Beach (free), Aloha Tower Market and International Marketplace (shopping!).
Water Activities, In, On, or Under the Water
Water activities abound everywhere in the Hawaiian Islands, but since Oahu is known as the gathering place, you will find more tour opportunities and things to do on Oahu than any of the other islands.
Try your hand at snorkeling Hanauma Bay, learn to surf, take a boat ride (cataraman, outrigger canoe, submarine), go diving, learn to paddleboard, rent water trykes, boogieboard or just play in the warm (72 degree) crystal clear waters.
Honolulu is a thriving city and you can find shopping and dining experiences here for every taste under the sun! For the uber cheap, head to the International Marketplace. You can find cheap gifts to return home with as well as cheap eats in the food court.
If your tastes run to a bit higher end, Kalakaua Avenue and Kuhio Avenue in the Waikiki area both are lined with shopping and dining options, as well as all the other businesses you will generally find in a city.
For mall type shopping you can hit Royal Hawaiian Center, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Ward Center, or Ala Moana Shopping Center.
For more of the small shops you might try Hilton Hawaiian Village shops, Kings Village, and the Waikiki Beach Walk.
