Molokai Hawaii is known as the friendly island. Why? Because the people here are charming and welcoming. It is not uncommon for them to wave at you as they pass you on the road, or for them to stop and chat with you if you are stopped by the road enjoying one of the sights, like the Rainbow Birds.
You won't find a lot of tourist activities here like you will on the other islands. But you will find a multitude of deserted beaches like this one.
This is the view you get from sitting inside a cave.
A local inhabitant turned us on to this cozy little place to sit and watch the waves roll in. It was tucked into the side of a cliff and if he had not told us about it, we would have missed it.
We sat and enjoyed the view for a couple of hours and saw only 2 other people and they were just passing through.
What Else Is On Molokai?
Besides empty beaches and friendly people, you will find Kalaupapa pennisula, which is where Father Damien cared for people afflicted with Leprosy.
There are only a few ways to visit the pennisula, which is why the leper patients were secluded there. Today, you can take a mule ride down the trail, walk the trail or fly in.
Each of the options are expensive, with hiking in the cheapest option and even that will run a cool $69.
Riding the mule down the trail will put you back $199, or you can fly in from Molokai for $249 or from Honolulu for $399.
Since my budget did not allow for these expenses, I took in the view from the overlook.
Since the island is sparsly populated, drive around the island and take in some of the beautiful views like these from Halawa Valley.
This house is being reclaimed by the vegetation in Halawa Valley.
Enjoy the Wildlife
We found this guy just haning out waiting for dinner to drop in on our drive through Halawa Valley.
I didn't want to get too close, which is why the picture is blurry!
Nene are the Hawaii state bird and they are on the protected list. We have caught glimpses of Nene on other islands, but they were plentiful on the island of Molokai in Hawaii.
Over on the west side of the island you can see groups of wild turkey. We spotted about 25 roaming the lawn of a resort.
Isn't he adorable?
Is this the most beautiful flock of birds you have ever seen or what? These are a specialty of Molokai Hawaii, found nowhere else.
