Follow some common sense rules when you head to Kauai beaches and you won't be letting an accident spoil your day.
If you have never been to the ocean these may not be common sense to you, so I'll repeat them for you.
Don't turn your back on the ocean.
Not all waves are created the same and you never know when a large one will come rolling in.
They can knock you off your feet, or worse off a ledge.
Don't swim alone. Even if you haven't eaten in the last half hour and aren't worried about cramps, you never know when trouble can strike.
And if it does you want to have a friend handy.
A rip current can be present or even form at any time and you don't want to get caught in one of those. (If you do, remember to swim parallel to the current, not against it)
Don't swim in murky water. Why? Because sharks like to feed in murky water, such as at the mouth of the river. The sediment coming downstream takes a while to settle out once it hits the ocean.
If you remember to respect the ocean you will get along quite nicely. Too many people either don't know or don't remember this one simple rule of ocean safety.
The oceans of Hawaii can be a delight to play in, the water is so warm and with the beautiful Kauai weather to greet you when you step out of the ocean and onto the beach it is one of the greatest combinations in the world for a vacation.
But if you forget to pay attention it can be downright dangerous!
So do yourself a favor and don't let your vacation be ruined by not paying attention to ocean conditions.
Wear your sunscreen
Even with sunscreen, you need to be careful about how long you hang out on Kauai Beaches. You want to make sure you use a stronger SPF than you do at home.
Hawaii is much closer to the equator than the mainland US, so you won't be used to the intenseness of the sun.
Many people who never burn at home quickly find themselves turning red after being out too long in the Hawaiian sun without protection.
Remember to reapply after swimming or sweating.
It's not a bad idea to make use of the sun protection shirts on the market today. Many people use these when participating in water sports. If you burn easily, go for one with an SPF of 50 and go for the one with long sleeves.
Stay hydrated
Nothing will ruin a day at Kauai Beaches quicker than a case of heat related illness.
Its easy to become dehydrated while playing on Hawaiian beaches since the trade winds and playing in the water tend to make you feel cool even when you are sweating.
It's really easy to be prepared for a day at the beach and very inexpensive too. All you need to do is grab yourself a collapsible cooler, throw in some ice to keep your water cool and make sure you drink it during the day.
That collapsible cooler will fit easily in your luggage so you can bring one from home. Its also a great place to throw in some snacks so you can stay at the beach longer.
If you follow the three basic steps of respecting the ocean, wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated it will go a long way towards ensuring that you will keep the good times rolling on Kauai beaches.
